Lake Mary has been a part of the Greater Orlando area since its earliest days. It was named after Mary Sundell, the wife of Reverend John Francis Sundell, who settled on the northern shores of Crystal Lake. Reverend John Francis Sundell and his family were originally from Sweden and they had come to work at Bellefontaine Cemetery.
As the number of people grew in the tiny settlement along the south Florida Railroad, more families were drawn to Lake Mary. Though originally called Crystal Lake or Belle Fontaine Station, it later became known as both Lake Griffin and finally in 1926 as Lake Mary; replacing the town’s previous self-titled name with that of Rev. John F. Sundell’s daughter, Mary. Lake Mary photo courtesy of Wikipedia Lake Mary
